Top Bank Stocks For 2014

Today, MoneyShow's Jim Jubak discusses China in regards to the adage "Bad News is Good News," because bad news about China's economy might hasten the start of some kind of Chinese governmentr financialtimulus.

Youe familiar with ad news is good newsmarkets from the behavior of US stocks during the last year on negative news about US economic growth. The market rallied on many bad news days, on the theory that weaker than expected US economic growth would keep the Federal Reserve from cutting back its purchases of Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities, and put off any increase in short-term interest rates.

It looks like China is headed into that same kind of ad news is good newsdirection. I think it a little early to proclaim that this logic is in the ascendant, but I do think traders are starting to think that more bad news about China economy is a good thing, because it pushes up the start of stimulus from the Chinese government and the People Bank.

Finally, outside the eurozone entirely, Great Britain has come within spitting distance of its own all-time stock market high, with the FTSE 100 (FTSEINDICES: ^FTSE  ) closing today at levels about 1% below the record mark of 6,930 set on the last trading day of 1999. The banking sector has done particularly well lately, with Royal Bank of Scotland (NYSE: RBS  ) having produced extremely strong gains in what is shaping up to become a full recovery from the depths of the financial crisis. Insulated from the eurozone's troubles to some extent because of its decision to retain its own currency, Great Britain is dealing with its own austerity issues, but with the Canadian central bank leader slated to take over as head of the Bank of England, policy changes may be in the offing for the island nation later this year.

Mosaic (MOS), Agrium (AGU), Intrepid Potash (IPI) and CF Industries (CF) have been moving and trading hand-in-hand, with AGU, BHP and Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (RNF) trading the best, losing the least and rebounding the most since July 30th. IPI has sold off a lot more in the post-news period, as would be expected from a smaller, less established company with mine projects still in development. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) announced plans to proceed with its Jansen Mine Project in Saskatchewan, Canada, potentially tapping the largest and longest-lasting supply in the world known at this time. Scotiabank (BNS) recently commented on Jansen, stating that the added supply "could add the equivalent of 18%-20% of the potash market over recent years." Nearly all of the companies mentioned have had a pretty predictable mix of upgrades and downgrades. That's what makes a market.
