Top Dividend Companies To Buy Right Now

Big pharma isn't the first industry many investors envision when dreaming of the big profits to be made from health care stocks. While blockbuster drugs can propel the top big pharma companies to massive profits, these broad behemoths can't match the exciting growth potential and immediate investor return of an up-and-coming biotech firm breaking out into its own.

For dividend investors, however, big pharma's unmatched in health care. Offering the stability of a wide drug portfolio and sizable revenue, top pharmaceutical firms are enticing picks for income investors. Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) stock's 3.8% dividend yields stands out as one of the larger offerings in the sector, but is this the stock income investors can't afford to pass up?

Big payout, little flexibility
That 3.8% dividend with Merck stock is a big one: The yield tops many of its competitors in big pharma, but it does so at a cost. The dividend costs the firm an 87% dividend payout ratio, which is a tough pill to swallow for a company struggling with patent cliff-related revenue drops. There's little room for Merck to increase its dividend with that substantial of a payout.

Back in June, we published an article titled "Bristol-Myers Squibb: The Untold Story Of Led Zeppelin" where we detailed Bristol-Myers' product portfolio, highlighted potential risks due to loss of patent exclusivity and benchmarked its valuation ratios to a couple of its peers. We opined that Bristol-Myers might be richly valued. Share price trended slightly lower, hovered around $42 for a while and, since last week, started rising back again.

When revisiting the benchmarks, three month on, Bristol-Myers still does not fare well in terms of price-to-earnings and price-to-sales ratios. Although it is the lowest in the group in terms of current dividend yield, 3.2 yield is still respectable. The question is whether the company will be able to maintain it going forward.

Though GE Capital has been a huge source of revenue for the parent company, its earnings aren always seen in the light of income from industrial activities leading to how it has been cheaply perceived among its peers. For example, among GE peers in the industrial sector like Honeywell International (HON), United Technologies (UTX), Illinois Tool Works (ITW) and Emerson Electric (EMR), only Illinois Tool Works is cheaper than GE, but it is miles apart in growth potential when compared with GE. So, GE stock trades at a huge discount relative to all of its industrial peers except ITW which is rather odd all because of GE Capital. Though GE Capital has been contributing about 30% of GE earnings and, hence, a good percentage of its earnings per share (EPS), shedding GE Capital is the only way to make the industrial segments of GE to strive for better growth in the near future to make up for the original earnings growth of GE facilitated by GE Capital.

Guard Your Portfolio's Gains With This Defensive Measure

In recent years, the phrase "seeking alpha" has come into vogue. This refers to the ability of a portfolio to outperform the broader market or a related set of benchmarks. Yet in light of the market's choppy start to the second quarter, it may be better to seek "beta."

What's beta? It's the measurement of how a stock tends to react to the broader market. A stock with a high beta -- say, of 2.0 -- means it will typically move up or down at twice the rate of the broader market. (You can find this figure on the StreetAuthority's Yaho o Finance page. Just enter in a stock symbol and click its "key statistics" page.)

Right now, it's time to focus on investments with low or even negative beta. That way, you'll sleep well at night -- or even profit -- if the market heads south.

Hot Life Sciences Stocks To Watch Right Now

Low Beta = Defense
Low-beta stocks are often referred to as "defensive stocks." These aren't stocks that operate in the defense industry -- they're stocks (and sectors) that tend to hold their own in any market environment.

Take electric utilities, for example. Both Consolidated Edison (NYSE: ED) and Southern Co. (NYSE: SO), which are among the largest power providers in the eastern United States, each have a beta of less than 0.25. For that matter, other utilities such as Northwest Natural Gas Co. (NYSE: NWN), PG&E (NYSE: PCG) and WGL Holdings (NYSE: WGL) have very low betas.

Of course, such a low beta means that these kinds of stocks may not move very quickly when high-growth tech stocks are zooming ahead. Instead, investors often like them for their steady and growing dividends. And with such low betas, a 20% drop in the stock market would typically entail less than a 5% drop for these stocks.

Companies in the food business are also often seen as low-beta plays. Regardless of the broader economic climate, people still need to eat. As a result, sales and profits for these companies tend to be quite stable.

General Mills (NYSE: GIS), which owns dozens of brands such as Betty Crocker, Haagen-Dazs and Yoplait, is a model of consistency. Every year, management hikes the dividend (at a 10% annual pace over the past five years), and the company's base of investors tends to simply buy and hold this stock. As a result, its beta is quite low. Yet even a seemingly defensive stock is capable of solid share price appreciation.

If you are looking for fresh stocks in this extended bull market but are leery of getting in as the party is ending, then be sure to check out the beta. It's a good practice to know the beta of all of your portfolio holdings, as the highest-beta stocks may make the best sell candidates when it comes time to raise cash.

Going Negative
For some investors, it's crucial to hedge against a falling market by owning stocks or funds that tend to move in the opposite direction of the stock market. These are known as "negative beta" investments. You won't find any stocks that have a negative beta, as they would eventually fall to zero as the stock market tends to rise over the course of many years. But there are a number of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that do the job. These are known as inverse funds, as they move in the opposite direction of the market. The most popular negative-beta inverse funds include:

ProShares UltraShort S&P500 ETF (NYSE: SDS): This ETF moves at twice the rate of the S&P 500 in the opposite direction. Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear 3X Shares (NYSE: TZA): This ETF moves at three times the rate of the small-cap focused Russell 2000 in the opposite direction. ProShares Short QQQ (NYSE: PSQ): This fund moves in the opposite direction -- on a 1-to-1 basis -- as the Nasdaq 100.

Risks To Consider: A focus on low-beta stocks could lead to an underperforming portfolio if the market moves yet higher. A focus on negative-beta investments could cause you to lose money when the markets rise.

Action To Take --> The S&P 500 has already managed to fall more than 1% on two separate occasions since the beginning of April. Those drops may be a sign that the long-standing bull market is getting tired. A sideways market is often a harbinger of an eventual shift in market direction, which is why it's important to take a defensive posture when you're aiming for further upside. As this chart shows, the S&P 500 is just above its 50-day moving average, and any move below 1,540 may signal trouble ahead.

Earlier this week, Taseko announced that its chief financial officer, Peter C. Mitchell, was leaving for a company it did not identify. On Wednesday, we learned the identity of the company when Coeur d' Alene announced Mitchell will become its own new CFO. Coeur had been without a CFO since Frank Hanagarne was promoted out of the office back in February to take over as the company's chief operating officer.

In a filing with the SEC, Coeur said Mitchell will be paid a base salary of $400,000 with an annual bonus targeting 75% of salary. He will also receive an initial grant of $200,000 worth of restricted stock units, and a targeted long-term equity incentive award of 225% of base salary.

Those dollar amounts might buy more shares of Coeur stock than usual. The company announced disappointing earnings this morning, with the result that its stock price had gotten 5% cheaper, trading as of this writing around $14.43.

    Meridian Growth Fund performance

Compass Minerals(CMP) is a leading producer of rock salt and specialty potash fertilizer. Its unique collection of resource assets has helped the company generate historically high returns on capital. We invested in Compass as we believed that earnings were due to turn after four years of weak road salt demand driven by mild Northeast winters and production problems at its potash mines. During 2013 the potash industry was rocked by the potential collapse of a European cartel, which led to falling potash prices. Compass Minerals (CMP) is a producer of minerals, including salt, sulfate of potash specialty fertilizer and magnesium chloride. This stock closed up 3.4% at $75.60 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 913,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 212,481

    Volume % Change: 315%

From a technical perspective, CMP gapped higher here off its recent low of $64.24 with heavy upside volume. This stock recently gapped down sharply from around $90 to $64.24 with heavy downside volume. That move pushed shares of CMP into extremely oversold territory, since the stock's current relative strength index reading is 25.78. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it's also an area where a stock can experience a powerful bounce higher from. Shares of CMP are now starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CMP manages to take out its gap down day high of $78.20 and then once it clears its 200-day moving average at $79.14 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CMP as long as it's trending above Wednesday's low of $73.07 or $72.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 212,481 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CMP will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone that started near $90.

Compass Minerals (NYSE: CMP  ) is a sleepy producer of a boring product: rock salt. But it has a strong competitive advantage. It owns the world's largest rock salt mine, which luckily is conveniently located near the major deicing markets of the Great Lakes region. This combination of a great mining resource and ideal location provide the company with a wide, crocodile-filled competitive moat.

Talk about a blast from the past. After waiting for years, U.S. drug giant Merck & Co. (MRK) set loose clinical trial results at today session of the American Heart Association annual meeting showing that the cholesterol-lowering medication Vytorin, which combines the drug Zocor and Zetia into one pill, helped prevent heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events.

    Bloomberg News

The study results showed a modest benefit a 6.4% reduction in cardiovascular events n high-risk patients compared to those being treated with Zocor alone. But the data is regarded as a big deal for Zetia.

Unlike Zocor, which is a member of the blockbuster statin class of cholesterol drugs, Zetia fights cholesterol by preventing its absorption from food. The data released today marks the first time a drug outside the statin family was shown to help lower the risk of serious cardiovascular problems.

Sales of Vytorin and Zetia have suffered over the year amid patent expirations and questions about whether the drugs lowered LDL without improving cardiovascular outcomes.

Share of Merck have gained rose 1% to $59.57 at 1:39 p.m.

As Mark Schoenebaum, the pharmaceutical analyst at Evercore ISI, wrote in a note out today:

The trial hithe results today are positive for Merck’s Zetia and Vytorin but go beyond by suggesting that LDL lowering with drugs other than statins provides a cardiovascular benefit (a reaffirming of the LDL hypothesis that was beginning to be questioned) and that LDL levels should possibly be driven lower than guidelines have recommended (below 70 mg/dl). Today’s results add the first real data point to our understanding of the relationship between LDL reduction and outcomes at very low LDL levels/p>

How Sony and Disney Could Both Win Big With Spider-Man

Take heart, Spidey fans. Your favorite web-slinging superhero may still be in line to receive the proper big-screen treatment he deserves. In this case, that could be a huge catalyst for investors in both Sony (NYSE: SNE  ) and The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS  ) .

Despite the fact Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in 2009, Sony still holds the film rights to Spider-Man. And it's no mystery Sony Pictures has made a bundle in its attempts to capitalize on those rights, generating nearly $4 billion in gross box office receipts from five separate films featuring the character since 2002.

Sony's predicament
Unfortunately, all is not well in Sony's neck of the woods. Despite estimates pegging The Amazing Spider-Man 2's production budget at an enormous $255 million, Sony's most recent effort received not only the franchise's worst critical response with a painful 53% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but also the lowest worldwide box office gross of any Spider-Man film, at $709 million.

Most notably, last year's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to capture the important hearts of domestic audiences; waning stateside interest in Spidey resulted in the addition of a modest $202.9 million to that total. It's unsettling that the largest box-office market in the world couldn't seem to care less about Sony's cinematic vision of this formerly bankable character:

(Hover over chart to see exact dollar figures), Data source: Box Office Mojo.

Following Sony's widely publicized hacking debacle, The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog reported on leaked emails which revealed that executives from both Sony Pictures and Disney had been communicating as late as Oct. 30, 2014, regarding a number of mutually beneficial Spider-Man crossovers.

Most notably, the WSJ noted that Disney and Marvel had wanted to include Spider-Man in 2016's Captain America: Civil War -- which makes sense considering Spider-Man plays a key role in the corresponding Civil War narrative in the comics. But those talks broke down when Sony Pictures learned such a deal would involve granting complete creative control to Marvel -- and it wanted to essentially start from scratch with its own version of the web slinger.

According to a more recent report from Latino-Review, a source said the proposed deal previously on the table was a co-production agreement under which Marvel would assume creative control, and also finance 60% of the cost of future Spider-Man films, with Sony shouldering the remaining 40%.

This isn't over yet
Everything changed following the hack. Specifically, Latino-Review says, the higher-ups at Sony Pictures parent Sony Japan not only view their subordinates' handling of Spider-Man as "disappointing," but also want Sony Pictures to return to the negotiating table with Disney regardless of whether it involves giving up creative control.

And why not? There are literally dozens of superhero movies already planned during the next several years that pull from the vast character universes controlled by both Disney's Marvel and Time Warner's DC. It's not hard, then, to envision the moviegoing public continuing to sweep Sony's less-compelling Spider-Man universe under the rug in favor of Disney's and Time Warner's more-established, more-cohesive franchises. Disney, in particular, has arguably set an impossibly high standard with regard to confluent storylines, leaving Sony in the unenviable position of trying to keep pace.

In short, if Sony can't beat Disney, why not join forces and share in its success?

It seems doubtful Sony can make such a deal happen in time to include Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. We already know Marvel has Black Panther effectively filling Spidey's original role in the film, which should segue nicely into Black Panther's own planned late-2017 movie.

With so many other Marvel movies already in the works, from Doctor Strange in late-2016 to Captain Marvel, Inhumans, and Avengers: Infinity War Part I in 2018, something tells me it wouldn't be too difficult for Disney to make room for a new Spider-Man somewhere in the mix. If that happens, it's hard to imagine any scenario in which it wouldn't have massive positive implications for the financial performance of whichever film Marvel chooses.

Netflix's strategy: Shows for every age

carebears A modern version of the classic animated series "Care Bears" is the latest in a string of shows for kids commissioned by Netflix. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Just how important are children to the future of Netflix? The company famously doesn't release ratings, but it's willing to say that many of its shows for kids are TV-sized hits.

More than 70 kids shows have been streamed by some 2 million Netflix subscribers this year, according to the company's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos.

Although Sarandos won't name names, he said "more than a dozen" have been viewed by at least 5 million of Netflix's 35 million U.S. subscribers.

That underscores just how pivotal children's programming is, not just for Netflix, but for its competitors as well.

Netflix (NFLX, Tech30) carries scores of shows that have previously aired on the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and elsewhere, giving it a foundation to gain and retain subscribers. And just like it launched adult franchises "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black," it is creating original franchises for children.

In an interview about his kids' programming strategy, Sarandos acknowledged that it's taking a while -- animation, in particular, has a lengthy production cycle -- but said the company is making great strides to "create new brands for our increasingly global footprint."

Netflix's first original series for children, "Turbo: FAST," premiered last year. There are more than a dozen other originals on the way in the next two years, beginning next month, with "VeggieTales In The House."

One series not previously announced by Netflix is "Care Bears and Cousins," a franchise that dates back to the 1980s. The first season is being targeted for early 2016, though a specific release date isn't scheduled yet.

"Care Bears" and forthcoming Netflix franchises like "The Magic School Bus 360" and "Popples" are part of a nostalgia trend in television.

"A lot of it is just 'trusted brand,'" Sarandos said. Translation: parents are likely to let their children watch a new version of a show that they themselves used to watch.

Many of Netflix's forthcoming children's series come from its partnership with DreamWorks for 300-plus hours of programming. Others come from production companies in other countries -- Italy in the case of "Winx Club WOW: World of Winx," Japan in the case of "Kong -- King of the Apes."

The rights to rebroadcast some of these shows after the! ir Netflix debuts will be up for sale at MIPCOM, an annual entertainment marketplace that takes place in France this week. Sarandos will be there too, for a keynote interview on Tuesday.

Vive le streaming! Netflix enters France   Vive le streaming! Netflix enters France

One of his messages: acquired shows from suppliers like Disney (DIS) remain a "very important part" of Netflix's overall programming plan, and many of those shows have millions of cumulative viewers on Netflix. (The subtext: Netflix's licensing fees help keep those shows in production.)

"At no point do I think the originals will dominate the acquisitions," he said.

But the originals will help bolster Netflix's brand -- and make up for acquired programs that the service might be lacking in the future, as Disney, Nickelodeon and other rivals direct fans of those programs to their own on-demand apps.

"I think Netflix is a channel, and it's a different kind of channel for every one of our members," Sarandos said. "To a 12-year-old boy, Netflix means something completely different than it does to a 5-year-old girl or a 40-year-old."

Best Healthcare Technology Stocks For 2015

That's what distinguishes Netflix from a traditional cable channel like the Disney Channel, which targets a specific demographic.

"When you look at almost any content channel, the audience ages out of them," Sarandos said. "I watched it happen with my own children, who started with PBS and migrated to the Disney Channel and then Nick and then back to the Disney Channel and then ABC Family and then into mainstream television."

A streaming service, on the other hand, has different "buckets of programming" for different demographics.! Sarandos! sounded enthusiastic while talking about the prospects of personalization technology to "recognize changes in viewing patterns."

Over time, he said, "the site can, in a very automated way, age with you, based on the things you're watching."

It's Seamless over Starbucks for business travelers

seamless app Seamless is growing in popularity among business travelers in New York City. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Turns out that snagging a Starbucks sandwich for a quick bite simply will not do -- at least if you're in New York.

A new study released Thursday found that business travelers in New York City are abandoning Starbucks in favor of a meal from Seamless, the food delivery website and app.

"[Seamless is] aggregating a lot of the meal traffic," said Robert Neveu, CEO of Certify, which manages business traveler accounts and published the study.

The study examined data from over 6 million transactions in the last quarter, looking at expenses from with businesses large and small.

Neveu said business travelers want something that's convenient, fast, of reasonable quality and within their budget. Enter Seamless, which allows customers to search for food by cuisine, price and rating.

The app's popularity with the hotel-bound set is consistent with a recent report by Seamless' parent company GrubHub (GRUB). That data suggest hotel takeout orders have increased 125% across the country over the last three years.

While Seamless doesn't specifically reach out to business travelers, it's useful for that breed of traveler because "companies utilize Seamless corporate accounts to streamline food expenses," according to GrubHub CEO Matt Maloney.

"Travelers have access to wide variety of options that hotel room service can't match -- all without having to pick up the phone," Maloney said. That's not good news for traditional room service, which has seen a revenue hit of 9.5% in recent years, according to data from PFK Hospitality Research.

And Seamless seems to be gathering steam. GrubHub announced quarterly earnings on Thursday, posting record revenues of $60 million and 48% growth.

Though Starbucks (SBUX) lost its top spot in New York City, which it held since last year, it's still the most-expensed food vendor in the country for business travelers, who spend an average of $10 per visit. The coffee chain is ranked just above McDonald's and Subway overall. Seamless, on ! the other hand, isn't even in the top 25 vendors on the national scene.

Top 5 Supermarket Stocks To Invest In Right Now

"Their client base is clearly concentrated on the NYC marketplace," Neveu said.

The survey also found that the top city for business travelers was Chicago, followed closely by Houston. New York came in third, but also has the distinction of being the priciest city for dinner, with an average meal costing $71.

The average price for a Seamless-delivered meal in New York City? Less than half that, at $31.84.

Top China Companies For 2015: Juno Therapeutics Inc (JUNO)

Juno Therapeutics, Inc. (Juno) is a United States-based clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company. The Company is engaged in developing cell-based cancer immunotherapies based on its chimeric antigen receptor (CAR), and high-affinity T cell receptor (TCR), technologies to genetically engineer T cells to recognize and kill cancer cells. Through genetic engineering, the Company inserts a gene for a particular CAR or TCR construct into the T cell that enables it to better recognize cancer cells. Its CAR technology directs T cells to recognize cancer cells based on the expression of specific proteins located on the cell surface, whereas its TCR technology provides the T cells with a specific T cell receptor to recognize protein fragments derived from either the surface or inside the cell.

To provide treatment, the Company harvests blood cells from a cancer patient, separate the appropriate T cells, activate the cells, insert the gene sequence for the CAR or TCR construct into the cellsDeoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA), and grow these modified T cells to the desired dose level. The modified T cells can then be infused into the patient or frozen and stored for later infusion. Once infused, the T cells are designed to multiply, through a process known as cell expansion, when they encounter the targeted proteins and to kill the targeted cancer cells.

CD19-Directed Product Candidates

The Company product candidates, such as JCAR015, JCAR017, and JCAR014, which use CAR technology to target CD19, a protein expressed on the surface of almost all B cell leukemias and lymphomas. The Company has rights to commercialize each of these product candidates across the world. The Company JCAR015 is an advanced development product candidate, and it has demonstrated clinically meaningful complete remission rates in adult patients with r/r ALL. JCAR015 uses the CD28 costimulatory domain and CD3 enriched peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), which requires fewer process steps for! manufacture than its defined cell composition product candidates. JCAR015 is being tested in a Phase I open label clinical trial of patients with r/r ALL for the treatment of refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

JCAR017 also targets CD19, but differs from JCAR015 in several important respects. JCAR017 uses the 4-1BB costimulatory domain and a defined cell composition of CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells. JCAR017 is in development for pediatric patients with r/r ALL. JCAR017 is being evaluated in a Phase I/II clinical trial in pediatric r/r ALL.

JCAR014 also targets CD19. JCAR014 uses the 4-1BB costimulatory domain and is composed of CD8+ central memory T cells and CD4+ T cells in a defined ratio. JCAR014 is being evaluated in a Phase I/II trial as a treatment for a number of B cell malignancies in patients relapsed or refractory to standard therapies.

Additional Product Candidates

The Company is exploring the potential of its CAR and TCR technologies against targets that have the potential to treat cancers not targeted by CD19-directed products, in particular, difficult-to-treat solid organ tumors, such as certain breast, lung, and pancreatic cancers, as well as B cell malignancies that do not express CD19. The Company CD22 is a cell surface protein widely expressed on B lymphocytes. It is expressed by B cell malignancies, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The Company L1CAM, also known as CD171, is a cell-surface adhesion molecule that plays an important role in the development of a normal nervous system. It is overexpressed in neuroblastoma, and there is increasing evidence of aberrant expression in a variety of solid organ tumors, including glioblastoma and lung, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers.

The Company MUC-16 is a protein overexpressed in the ovarian cancers, but not on the surface of normal ovary cells. CA-125 is a protein found in the ! blood of ! ovarian cancer patients that results from the cleavage of MUC-16. CA-125 levels in the blood are a common test for ovarian cancer progression because they correlate with cancer progression. Its MUC-16/IL-12 product candidate uses its armored CAR technology. IL-12 is a cytokine that can help overcome the inhibitory effects that the tumor micro-environment can have on T cell activity.

The Company ROR-1 is a protein expressed in the formation of embryos, but in normal adult cells its surface expression is predominantly found at low levels on adipocytes, or fat cells, and briefly on precursors to B cells, or pre-B cells, during normal B cell maturation. ROR-1 is overexpressed on a variety of cancers including a subset of non-small cell lung cancer, triple negative breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer. It is expressed on B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia and mantle cell lymphoma. The Company high-affinity TCR T cell product candidate targets WT-1, an intracellular protein that is overexpressed in a number of cancers, including adult myeloid leukemia, or AML, and non-small cell lung, breast, pancreatic, ovarian, and colorectal cancers.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

To say that shares of IntelliCell BioSciences, Inc. (OTCMKTS:SVFC) has been disappointing since 2011 would be an understatement. SVFC has been an outright disaster since 2011, falling from a peak of $19.00 to a low of, well, just a few pennies as of late last year. In fact, there are those who are understandably wondering how the company is still alive, only producing about a half a million dollars in revenue in 2012, and then dialing that figure back down to nothing for the last few quarters. Yet, there's just something about a company that refuses to go away.... something compelling now.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Well, though I give myself a C for timing, it looks like I'm going to be able to give myself an A for stock-picking. Back on January 27th I deemed IntelliCell BioSciences, Inc. (OTCMKTS:SVFC) was a compelling buy, and though SVFC was stagnant for a month after that, it looks like the stock's finally getting on its horse. If you didn't get it then, you may want to get in now.

    Cell Therapeutics (NASDAQ: CTIC  )
Certainly no discussion of companies with large accumulated deficits would be complete without discussing a biotechnology company. It's perfectly understandable to see a biotech, especially a clinical-stage one, run with an accumulated deficit, as it takes time and money to build up a drug pipeline. However, after multiple complete response letters (the equivalent of a rejection) by the Food and Drug Administration and years without an approved drug, Cell Therapeutics racked up an astounding $1.83 billion in accumulated deficits through the end of fiscal 2012. By comparison, that's nearly 56 times larger than its shareholder equity.
